Genicular Artery Embolization

Genicular artery embolization is a new treatment for those with knee osteoarthritis. The genicular arteries are small arteries that supply the knee. These arteries can be embolized (blocked) using tiny beads to reduce excess blood flow to the synovium (lining of the knee). This process has been shown to reduce inflammation and pain due to osteoarthritis. This does NOT affect blood flow to the leg.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

• Between the age of 40-80
• Moderate to severe knee pain
• Diagnosed arthritis with failed conservative treatment (NSAIDs/PT/Joint injections)
• Patient seeking an alternative to a knee replacement.

What Should You Expect From Genicular Artery Embolization?

• Outpatient procedure with twilight sedation
• Clinical research shows 80% of patients report pain reduction from an 8/10 to 3/10.
• Up to 6 years of pain relief
• Side effects include slight bruising and/or minor inflammation for up to 2 weeks after procedure
